The height of the light pole will significantly affect the light intensity (i.e. ground illuminance, unit: Lux) and the uniformity of the light. The following are the specific influencing mechanisms and design points:
1. Illuminance attenuation law
The higher the light pole: the farther the light source is from the ground, the less luminous flux received per unit area, and the lower the ground illuminance.
Example: For the same lamp, when it is raised from 6 meters to 12 meters, the ground illuminance drops to 1/4 of the original (assuming no light distribution adjustment).
1. Adjust the power of the light source
When the light pole is raised: the light source power needs to be increased to compensate for the illumination attenuation.
2. Optimize the light distribution design
Narrow beam (such as 60°): suitable for high poles (10 meters +), focusing light to the road area to reduce scattering waste.
Wide beam (such as 120°): used for low poles (3~6 meters), with wider coverage but lower illumination.
3. Change the lighting method
Single-sided lighting: the height of the light pole is recommended to be ≥ 0.7×road width (such as 6-meter pole with 8.5-meter wide road).
Staggered lighting on both sides: the height of the light pole can be appropriately increased, while shortening the spacing (such as 10-meter pole + 25-meter spacing).
Conventional roads:
Light pole height ≈ road width × 0.6~1.0 (such as 5~8-meter pole for 8-meter wide road).
Asymmetric lighting to avoid light waste.
Highway/wide road:
Choose 10~12m high pole + narrow beam high power lamp (such as 100W LED).
Verification tool:
Use Dialux or AGi32 software to simulate illumination distribution to avoid estimation error by naked eye.
