Changes in LED Street Light Usage in Germany in 2015: Street lights refer to lamps that provide roadway lighting. Traditional street lights generally use high-intensity discharge (HID) lamps, such as high-pressure sodium (HPS), metal halide (MH), and mercury (MV) lamps.
LEDs offer unique advantages in street lighting because they are directional, durable, and have a long product lifespan.

In 2014, the number of LED street lights in use in Germany was 1 million units, accounting for only 13% of the total. By 2014, this figure had risen to 3.9 million units, representing approximately 30% of the total, while the total number of street lights in use in 2014 was approximately 13 million units. The increase in LED street light sales is primarily due to energy-saving lighting retrofit projects in various German cities, subsidized by government programs, that are replacing traditional HID street lights to achieve energy conservation and emission reduction goals.
German companies Hella and Philips Lighting already hold 10% of the German LED street light market.
